As Parkesburg gets ready to celebrate our town’s 140th birthday later this month its fun to take a look back at Parkesburg 100th birthday party.
In the summer of 1972 Parkesburg celebrated the 100th anniversary of becoming incorporated as a borough (1872). A week long celebration was held in July and included hundreds of local residents in special activities for young and older folks. Beards were grown, a queen contest was held, fashion shows were held, sky divers and helicopters came out of the sky, promenades about town were held, kids and adults dressed in Victorian garb, Kids Day in the Park with their pets and fun games.
A spectacular pageant was held nightly in Minch Park with a cast of hundreds of local folks taking part.
The week concluded with a two-hour parade with hundreds of marchers and thousands watching along the route. It was a wonderful event and many local residents remember and still talk proudly about a week in 1972.
On July 29th at Beale Manor there will be a display of memorabilia items from the 100th Anniversary. Also a movie taken during the celebration will be available for people to view and reminisce.
See you there!
